Shanghai received initial success recently in regulating upstream companies of 18 sewage treatment plants yielding water seriously polluted by heavy metals, thepaper.cn reported Saturday.

By the end of 2016, 18 local sewage treatment plants were found expelling water containing excessive heavy metals, six of which have been doing so for a long time.

According to Gu Siqing, deputy director of Qingpu District Environment Protection Bureau, the pollution traces back to the origin of the sewage.

Local authorities started to track the polluters via sewage plants. In Huaxin town of Qingpu district, officials spotted 12 upstream heavy polluters, among which nine have been shut down and three suspended until meeting disposal standards.
