Representatives from the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Shanghai, the Shanghai municipal government, local businessmen, academics and members of the city's foreign communities recently gathered to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of Indonesia's independence.

"Since August 17, 1945, the people of Indonesia have worked hard to continue to give meaning to our independence. And throughout all the highs and lows, we are now where we are," said Siti Nugraha Mauludiah, Consul General of Indonesia in Shanghai, during her welcoming speech on Friday in Shanghai.

She called China "one of Indonesia's most important friends and neighbors," with shared objectives in developing the global economy and promoting cultural understanding.

"Leaders from both countries have built close relations, a strong framework and a productive climate for intensive yet mutually beneficial cooperation," she said.

Turning to the Eastern China region, she said that Indonesia and Shanghai, East China's Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui and Jiangxi provinces are all close trade partners, with a trade value worth $15 billion in 2016.

"China is one of the top 10 investors in Indonesia, with a total investment of more than $2.6 billion. Around 200 Chinese investors in Indonesia are coming from the eastern region," she said.

Closing her speech, she called on guests to work together to take the strong relationship between Indonesia and China to the next level by inviting them to visit Indonesia.

"It is the biggest economy in Southeast Asia and the largest archipelagic country in the world. Indonesia has a lot to offer, to see, to explore, to hear, to taste and to experience," she said.
