Two militants were killed in an overnight fierce gunfight with contingents of police and Indian army in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Monday.

The gunfight between militants and government forces broke out at village Khudwani in Kulgam district, about 63 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two militants were killed in a gunfight with police and Indian army at Khudwani, Kulgam," a police spokesman said.

Police said the militants were killed after government forces launched search and cordon in the area on specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

Reports said Indian army or police have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

According to the spokesman, one person was arrested near the gunfight site. Reports said he was believed to be an over ground worker of militants.

Following the killing of militants, protests broke out in the area. Reports said protesters had assembled in the village and were shouting anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
