Staff of the civil defense office of Huangpu district recently discovered an old 1,600-square-meter air raid shelter beneath some rockwork at Penglai Park, chinanews.com reported Sunday.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Shanghai built many underground air raid shelters. Some, such as the shelter found in the park, have been abandoned and forgotten for over 40 years.

According to Yang Weikang, who is in charge of the project, after using geophysical exploration technology to locate the facility, a construction team had to cut through entrances sealed.

Bian Jiajun, a member of the prospecting team, said that detection of toxic gases, including hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and methane gas, should be conducted in advance before anyone enters into the shelter.

In 2016, Huangpu district started a three-year project to examine old, underground civil defense facilities. Currently, 60 percent of the shelters have been renovated.
