A Wuhan woman who attempted suicide in the Yangzte River was rescued after being swept 40 kilometers down the raging river.

Police were called after the 24-year-old woman surnamed Li was spotted drifting down China's longest river on Saturday.

Officers managed to reach Li, ending her five-hour journey in the frigid waters.

Li told officers she attempted to end her life around 4 am because she had been criticized by her employer numerous times and was ashamed.

However, Li said she immediately regretted the decision.

She struggled to reach the bank, but soon became exhausted and let the river take her through the dark.

Li said she began shouting for help at daybreak.

Police said that Li tiring herself out was what ultimately saved her.

"She saved energy by just lying on her back, which bought her enough time to be rescued," police told media.
