A man in Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province falsely reported to police he was robbed on payday so he could avoid handing over his salary to his wife.

The man, who was not named, strolled into the Beigan station on August 31, surveillance video shows.

When he claimed to have been robbed while driving his e-bike on the way home from work, police were suspicious.

"He answered every question rather calmly and didn't look disturbed or panicked at all," said detective Chen Xi.

Police reviewed traffic camera footage from the area where the man claimed he had been robbed.

They spotted him riding his e-bike, but no robbers.

After continued grilling by police, the man finally admitted to the ruse.

"He said his wife is always asking for money whenever he gets paid," said Chen. "Sometimes he'd say he had lost it, or that he had spent it all."

"He couldn't just give her the same excuses… so he decided to file a police report," Chen added.

The man was detained by police for 10 days and fined 500 yuan ($85) for filing a false report.
