The Weibo account of Yuan Tengfei, a former history teacher who has liberal leanings and is often critical of the government, was removed on Monday.

Yuan’s Twitter-like Weibo account, which had over 16 million followers, was found to be inaccessible Monday evening. It is not clear why Yuan’s account was shut since he has been known for critical comments against the government for a long time.

Yuan posted a comment on September 9th saying “it is a good day. The weather’s beautiful and I’m so happy.” China’s late leader Mao Zedong died on September 9th, 1976. There have been heated discussions about how Mao should be remembered among netizens of different political opinions. There is no evidence Yuan’s comments was related to the shut-down of his Weibo account.

Yuan became popular among some netizens in 2008 when videos of his history courses were posted online. The videos were classroom recordings that covered sensitive topics such as the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Yuan had also been highly critical of Mao and his policies.
