At least 40 people, including 23 children, were poisoned and hospitalized late Monday after children opened an industrial drum containing unknown chemicals in Turkey's southeastern Siirt province, Dogan News Agency reported.

When several children brought a chemical drum found outside the village and opened it by accident, local residents felt uncomfortable and some showed vomiting and nausea.

The patients were all immediately taken to Siirt State Hospital for treatment, and none of them are in life threats, the Siirt Province Governor office said in a written statement.

After the accident, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) teams, health care teams and Turkish Red Crescent were dispatched to the scene. The villagers nearby were evacuated as well.

According to initial probe, experts suspect chlorine and carbon to be reason of the poisoning. Further investigation is still underway.
