A 30-year-old man was found with a bright blue liver that doctors said may have been caused by the blue ink from his large wolf tattoo.

The discovery was made as the man surnamed Liu went to a hospital in Enshi, Hubei Province for gallbladder surgery, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported Monday.

"His liver was metallic blue, just like the color of blue ink," said Cai Kailin, a gastrointestinal specialist at the hospital. "[The operating doctors] believed the interior of his liver was also blue."

Besides the unnatural hue, Liu's liver was deemed healthy. Doctors immediately suspected the 100-square-centimeter tattoo of a wolf head covering Liu's back.

Cai theorized that heavy metals in the tattoo ink had entered Liu's bloodstream, eventually reaching the liver.

"Liver cells absorbed the blue dye, which changed the color of Liu's liver," he added.
