Shanghai recently brought into use the first set of electronic "e-police," a device that can detect and capture nine types of traffic offenses, thepaper.cn reported Wednesday.

According to the Traffic Police Department of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Security, local authorities invented an additional seven functions for its electronic surveillance based on a two-function device installed at the Hutai Road and Yichuan Road intersection.

This device captured 125 illegal traffic behaviors during its first week on duty.

The technical division of Shanghai's Traffic Police Department will utilize the devices based on their success.

Thirty sets of the preexisting e-police will be updated to the multifunctional version by the end of this year, and will update all the old surveillance equipment within two years.
