"The new apartment is in strong contrast to our previous one. I want to live in it right now."

So said Sun Huiju, a Beijing resident who moved to a new residential community after her apartment in a shantytown in Xicheng district started reconstruction work four years ago. She said that the new apartment has a European style and there are gardens on the roofs of the buildings. Her apartment was a part of the first project under the city's shantytown renovation campaign which was launched in downtown Beijing in 2013. A total of 1,242 households were involved in the project. The new homes have improved security systems, water drainage, heating, garbage disposal among other amenities.  (Source: Beijing Daily)
