A restaurant owner in Central China who hunted neighborhood dogs with a crossbow for their meat was caught following a dramatic car chase by a pet lover turned vigilante, police said Wednesday.

Shocking video footage shows the suspect, surnamed Du, being run off the road by an SUV in Yichang, Hubei Province.

Du escaped on foot while the SUV owner called police.

The SUV driver, a pet owner who was not named, claimed to have spotted Du driving the streets and shooting dogs with crossbow bolts.

Police said local residents had suspected Du killing their pets to be cooked and sold at his hot pot restaurant.

A police search of Du's vehicle revealed eight dog carcasses in the trunk and backseat. Many were found to be the pets of local community residents.

Officers said they tracked down Du, who turned himself in without incident.

Du admitted to hunting the dogs for their meat, adding that his wife, surnamed Wang, would ride along and collect the dead carcasses.

"One of my signature dishes at my restaurant is dog meat hotpot," said Du, "so I hunted dogs down in the streets to attract customers."

Yichang police are investigating the case.
