"The homemade mooncakes sold on WeChat are unbranded products without proper testing and certification by the food authorities."

So said a man surnamed Huang in commenting on the homemade mooncakes being sold from private kitchens on WeChat. Mooncakes are a staple of China's Mid-Autumn Festival which falls on October 4 this year, and homemade mooncakes have become increasingly popular as the celebration approaches. According to reports, WeChat shop owners promote their homemade mooncakes as handmade, custom-made and without additives. The food authorities are cautioning consumers against such products because they are unregulated and may be unsafe. They said if consumers insist on buying such items, they should at least double-check the expiration date and ask for the bill. (Source: Beijing Morning Post)
