A new exhibition featuring works, publications, photos and documents about 43 Chinese grandmasters of literature and arts kicked off at the National Museum of China on Saturday.

Century Masters, which is also a part of the 100-episode documentary show of the same-name, features some of the most well-known names in 20th-century China, from literature masters such as Lu Xun, Guo Moruo and Ba Jin to musician Nie Er, opera master Mei Lanfang and painters Qi Baishi and Xu Beihong.

According to the director of the National Museum of China, Lü Zhangshen, the exhibition will not only showcase works of art from these masters, but also provide a comprehensive review of their art career.

Lü explained that since these masters are the inheritors and creators of Chinese culture, "they not only influence us, but also inspire following generations. Bringing in younger people to attend this exhibition will be the key to continuing these masters' spirit and efforts."

At the opening, former minister of culture Cai Wu called the exhibition an important cultural project for looking back at how culture and the arts in the 20th century impacted the changing reality of China.

The exhibition is scheduled to run until September 26.
