After two weeks of intense construction and close monitoring, the high-profile shifting project of Shanghai's 135-year-old Jade Buddha Temple was completed on September 17.

Jade Buddha Temple was founded in 1882 in the central part of the city. The current annual visitor flow is about 2 million. It was reported that, in order to protect the integrity of the original history, the Buddha of the main hall and its cultural relics have been moved. This was a rare precedent in domestic architectural history.

Master Jue Xing, vice-chairman of the Buddhist Association of China, said that due to the narrow space between buildings, crowding could cause serious security risks. The main hall was built so long ago that it had become decayed. In order to better demonstrate the historical style and eliminate public safety hazards, Jade Buddha Temple decided to start the protective renovation project.
