A South China firefighter had to get his hands dirty to free a worker who fell into an asphalt tank Friday.

The construction worker was inspecting the asphalt tank filled with water in Laibin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region when he lost his balance and fell inside.

His feet became stuck in a sediment layer of asphalt as the water rose to his chest.

Rescue crews first pumped fresh oxygen into the 2.5-meter-deep silo to prevent the worker from suffocating from the asphalt fumes.

Workers first cut a hole to drain the tank then sent a firefighter to pull the trapped worker out.

The rescuer dug into the sludgy asphalt to free the man's feet before pulling him from the tank in what was a 1-hour rescue operation.

The worker was given first aid before being sent to a nearby hospital where he is receiving treatment.
