Over the weekend, the month-long Women of the World festival opened in Beijing.

Established by Jude Kelly, the artistic director of the Southbank Centre in London, in 2010, the festival has toured 20 cities around the world including New York, Paris and Sydney.

Kelly said that the goal of the festival is to pay tribute to the "achievements of women, their energy and their courage."

The festival, which has come to China for the first time, includes various events ranging from lectures, salons and workshops to free performances and street markets.

Nearly 100 Chinese women who are prominent in their fields will host lectures, salons and workshops to share their experiences.

A free exhibition featuring artworks from female artists such as Pan Yuliang, Liu Meizi and Xu Xin is also being held at the Tiaoqiao Performing Arts Center in Beijing.

Zhang Li, general manager of the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, said at the opening on Saturday that women do not have to limit success to their careers, but can also achieve happiness in their personal lives as well.
