The standouts in both the men's and women's races at the Chengdu Marathon on Saturday were the Ethiopians, who joined a total of 20,000 participants at the 42.195-­kilometer run in the capital of Southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Geza Taddessa Senebeta took the men's title with a time of 2 hours 17 minutes and 23 seconds, followed by compatriot Balew Yihunie Derseh who was only 1 second behind. Shume Tafa Desta finished in third place.

In the women's competition, Zinash Estifo Banetirga clocked in at 2:43:17 to claim the victory.

The organizers reported a total of 43,365 people sent in applications for the event.
