A new project to improve the urban area near Baitasi, or White Pagoda Temple, through public participation is being showcased during the ongoing Beijing Design Week, which started Friday.

According to Zhang Li from Tsinghua University's World Architecture magazine, Baitasi Remade, which debuted at the 2015 Beijing Design Week, is a program tasked with getting communities engaged in urban renewal.

Baitasi is located in an old low-rise residential district of Beijing, one of the last remaining traditional residential areas in the capital.

In alignment with recent social developments, urban engineers have begun realizing that large-scale demolition and construction of Beijing's urban core is no longer a viable option. Instead, urban planners are paying more attention to implementing small scale, organic renovation plans.

The showcase, which takes "Toward New Neighborhoods" as its theme, aims to make use of residents' personal experience to revitalize neighborhoods through courtyard transformation, hutong (alleyway) enhancement and community co-construction.

The showcase is scheduled to come to an end on October 7.
