Angola's new president, Joao Lourenco, on Tuesday called for greater transparency so as to better fight corruption and economic crimes rooted in some institutions.

Lourenco, who was speaking for the first time after being sworn in as president before more than 30,000 people, urged all the people to work together to put an end to the evil of corruption and impunity that seriously threatens the foundations of the Angolan society.

He also pledged to combat poverty as a priority, focusing on the creation of stable employment and the meritorious distribution of available resources, and guaranteeing the inclusion of economic and social policies that protect workers.

Lourenco was sworn in as the new president earlier Tuesday, taking over from the longtime leader Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who decided to step down and not run for this year's election.
