Mother of French extremists sentenced to 10 years in jail

A French court on Friday had given a ten-year jail term to a mother of an extremist who joined fighters in Syria on charges of "unwavering commitment" to the Islamic State, state-run radio reported on Friday.

Christine Riviere, 51, was converted to Islam and allegedly had been radicalized in 2011-2012. She was arrested in 2014 after she traveled to Syria three times which she said were to spend time with her son before he was "martyred", state-run France info.

Called by investigators "Jihadi Granny," Riviere was accused "of association of criminals to prepare acts of terrorism," according to the report.

Riviere's son, Tyler Vilus, went to the Iraqi-Syrian region in 2012. He was arrested in Turkey three years later and then extradited to France.

He was suspected of having contacts with members of the group that planned and carried Paris attacks in 2015 in which 130 people were killed.
