First GREE UCI WorldTour - Tour of Guangxi ends

After six days of competition, the 2017 GREE Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) WorldTour - Tour of Guangxi concluded on October 24.

The tour comprised six stages and covered 940 kilometers, stretching across the cities of Beihai, Qinzhou, Nanning, Liuzhou and Guilin in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Belgian Tim Wellens from Team Lotto Soudal was the grand champion.

The first three stages were flat, and Fernando Gaviria, a cyclist from Colombia, won all three, earning applause from spectators. Wellens took the lead during the fourth stage in the Nanning-Nongla Scenic Area to win the climbing phase of the tour. Dylan Groenewegen from Team LottoNL-Jumbo won in the 212.2-kilometer Liuzhou-Guilin stage. However, Wellens regained the lead and won the final stage to become the first grand champion of the UCI WorldTour - Tour of Guangxi.

The first UCI WorldTour to be held in China, the 2017 GREE UCI WorldTour - Tour of Guangxi attracted many sports and fitness enthusiasts. Every stage of the competition had lots of spectators in attendance. Several domestic and overseas media, including CCTV-5, the Travel Channel, Xinhua Net, Fox Sports and Direct TV also broadcasted the event. A total of 118 countries and regions worldwide reported on the event by means of live and delayed broadcasts. The 2017 GREE UCI WorldTour - Tour of Guangxi was also a hot topic on social media.

The tour used some of the latest Internet technologies to keep Chinese and foreign media up to date on match dynamics. Helicopters, ultra-large LED screen trucks, TV motorcycles and other advanced equipment were also used to provide onlookers with a superior experience. The organizing committee also recruited over 3,300 volunteers to ensure a safe and smooth event.

The GREE UCI WorldTour - Tour of Guangxi is a new UCI event, and its success has helped solidify China's presence in the cycling world. It also has great significance for the Guangxi Autonomous Region, which has shown the world that it is ready to stage world-class cycling events. The GREE UCI WorldTour - Tour of Guangxi also paves the way for further development opportunities in the sector, as well as the popularization of cycling and upgrades to the bicycle industry in China, placing the nation in a good position to realize its dream of becoming a powerful nation in sports.
