Ethnic minority areas have been a major focus of China's nationwide poverty alleviation campaign over the past five years.

Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture is home to the Hui and 30 other ethnic minority groups. It is also among some of the poorest regions in China. In 2011, about 900,200 people lived below the national poverty line in Linxia, or more than half the local population. But that figure plunged to 298,400 at the end of 2016.

Many Linxia villages are stuck in the earliest stages of agricultural development and have a tough road ahead reaching the target of a well-off society by 2020, but local officials say no one should be left behind.
