The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (AmCham) announced the newest winners of its annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) awards at a sustainability forum held last week at The Peninsula Shanghai. Winners included General Motors China, Shanghai Disney Resort, L'Oréal China, Citi China, JD.com and Project HOPE.

The forum's theme was Sustainable Business in Globalization 2.0. It focused on how sustainability stands out as an effective approach for development in the face of a stagnating global economy, resurfacing de-localization and other global governance challenges.

The forum began with keynote addresses from Han Xiuyu, director at the Ministry of Commerce, and John Wang, senior vice president and president of Greater China for Philips Lighting. Wang explained his views on sustainability, as "… more than a corporate responsibility or even a global imperative, but fundamentally a better way of doing business."

Following keynote addresses from government and business leaders, the forum featured four sessions on themes including Creating Sustainable Brands, CSR in the Digital Age, Value-Based Partnerships and Aligning Global and Local Sustainability Goals.

Participants included senior executives from Metro, Cargill, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, PwC, JD.com and Visa.

Owen Ma, vice president of corporate affairs at Cargill China, underscored how Cargill believes "sustainability will enable us to deliver unique value for our customers and consumers, and this capability is fundamental to realizing our purpose to be the leader in nourishing the world in a safe, responsible and sustainable way."
