Chinese original musical Zitan (Sandalwood) produced by a local Langfang troupe will take the stage at Beijing's Poly Theater from December 13 to 14.

According to the production's director, Chen Wei, the musical tells the story of a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) furniture carpenter who passes down his skills to the next generation in order to keep China's cultural heritage alive.

Sandalwood is a commonly used material in Chinese wood furniture, especially in Langfang, a small city in Hebei Province south of Beijing. Sandalwood and carpentry both play an important part in local culture and life in Langfang, which is one of the main reasons that the directing team chose the two as the main theme for the musical.

In order to represent the past glory of local folk culture, the director will bring one of the biggest "official hat" armchairs ever made to the stage. Official hat armchairs, a type of formal chair, were one of the most popular chair designs during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties.

Music will also feature local folk songs and 28 original songs.
