Over 3.5 million registered volunteers in Shanghai are presently engaged in various local voluntary projects, Laodong Daily reported Tuesday.

Among them, young- and middle-aged residents aged between 20 and 50 years old are "the backbone power of Shanghai's volunteers," accounting for over 40 percent, recent statistics show.

The Peking Opera inheritance project, initiated by Shanghai Jingju Theatre Co, has attracted many young volunteers who hope to keep Chinese art and traditional culture alive. More young people who are interested in sports and fitness are also registering to become marathon volunteers.

A report on the development of Shanghai's community volunteer service center shows that the city's voluntary projects are becoming more diversified. Volunteer service activities in Shanghai cover more than 22 fields, including elderly care, traffic maintenance, pavilion guidance, employment, safety patrolling and science, attracting talents from many sectors to give something back to their community.
