Regulators in a town in Hebei Province have launched a building safety campaign in the wake of deadly fires that grabbed media headlines in neighboring Beijing.

A Yanjiao town government employee confirmed with the Global Times on Wednesday that they have begun shutting down illegal houses in Sanhe near southeastern Beijing's Tongzhou district.

The campaign targets buildings constructed by villagers for rent in violation of laws that include the Fire Prevention Law and house rental regulations, according to a notice with the official seal of Sanhe circulating online.

The inspection and evictions have deprived them of earnings, villagers told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"Instead of banning us from renting out houses, we hope to cooperate with the local government on rectifying the houses to avoid safety hazards," a villager, surnamed Xu told the Global Times.

"We need the money to make a living and pay off the debts we made building the houses," he said.

On December 21, the Hebei city of Langfang vowed to clear up safety hazards, saying it would draw lessons from two blazes that killed 19 in Beijing and 10 in Tianjin.

Beijing officials have vowed to avoid acting too hastily with the implementation of their housing safety campaigns.
