Police in Dandong, Northeast China's Liaoning Province said a woman and her boyfriend were caught for booking a hotel room using his deceased wife's ID.

The suspects, surnamed He and Zhang, were each fined 500 yuan ($77) for use of the identity of a deceased person, media reported on Sunday.

The woman surnamed He realized she had forgotten her ID card as she and Zhang checked into a Dandong hotel on December 23.

Zhang happened to have his dead wife's ID card on him and passed it to He, police said.

Hotels in China not only require ID but also employees must snap headshots of guests upon check-in.

However, He still managed to dupe hotel staff by posing as Zhang's dead spouse. They were only discovered when local police could not match the photo taken at the reception desk with the ID.

Police also fined the employee on duty 200 yuan for dereliction of duty.
