Four people were detained after they brutally assaulted a waiter at an East China restaurant because they said their check was tantamount to an insult.

The men became upset when a bill arrived for 250 yuan ($38), a number that in Chinese is widely associated as having the meaning "stupid" or "imbecile," thepaper.cn reported.

The assault victim surnamed Chen said he couldn't do anything about it.

"That's what their check was, so I asked them for 250 yuan," said Chen, who works at the hotpot restaurant in Linyi, Shandong Province.

"Then they yelled that I give them a discount," he said.

Shocking video from the Thursday incident first shows one of the men slap Chen in the face.

The smack triggered a scuffle between them, leading the others to gang up on Chen.

Two other employees attempted to intervene but failed as the men continued to pummel Chen for about one minute, video shows.

The assault was punctuated by one of the men beating Chen with a chair and throwing a full hotpot at him.

The men were detained and police are investigating the case.
