A man in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning Province who has collected more than 1,000 hammers said he was struck by the tool's cultural significance.

"I can't help collecting them, it's culture that leads me forward," said Wang Xiaoli, collector and chairman of Heping district antique chamber of commerce.

Wang said over the past 17 years he has spent more than 1 million yuan ($153,815) on his collection.

"Each one symbolizes history and comes at a cost, all of which indicate they are unique," said Wang.

However, those costs are getting higher ever since Wang's reputation as a hammer enthusiast got around. Many dealers seek him out to bang out a deal only to jack up the price, he said.

Despite his family not being on the same page, Wang said he's on a mission.

"I hope to donate my collection to the government and see them in the museum," said Wang.
