"We are not allowed to wear thick down jackets or even a mask!"

Workers cleaning the external walls of the Shanghai Tower, a new 632-meter-high landmark skyscraper, have their own tricks to guard against the recent freezing weather, Laodong Daily reported Tuesday. According to Yu Zhiping, a manager of a local cleaning business, skyscraper cleaners cannot stop working even when temperatures drop to 0 C. To stay flexible, cleaners are also not allowed to wear too much clothing except for a simple cotton-padded vest. The company provides them with gloves and will not let them work if they catch a cold or fever while doing their job. Yu said that the external walls of the tower must be cleaned four times every year.
