The European Investment Bank (EIB), the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the promoter Hohhot Gas Ltd jointly signed an agreement to support the Hohhot Energy Efficiency project at the Beijing office of the Delegation of the European Union to China on January 12. The Hohhot Energy Efficiency project will fund a switch from coal to gas-fired boilers and the renovation of existing gas-fired boilers and heating supply pipelines. Located in Hohhot in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the project is expected to achieve full implementation in four years. Post-completion, the project is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption through increased efficiency in heat generation and distribution and cut greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants related to coal-fired heat generation. It is estimated that the project will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 657,300 tons each year. The EIB has approved a loan of 162 million euros ($195 million), reinforcing the long-standing cooperation between China and the EU on climate change and their commitment to further step up joint efforts. The project is also in line with the EU-China Partnership on Climate Change which looks at climate change mitigation measure. Jonathan Taylor, the vice president of EIB, Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, the EU Ambassador to China and representatives from the Chinese side made statements after the signing.
