Building 2 of Lane 1220 on Beijing Road  West in Jing'an district was engulfed in flames on Tuesday. Firefighters immediately rushed to the scene to save lives and property. Fortunately, no deaths were announced, Knews reported Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is thought to have been a tenant's electric heating device. A resident surnamed Ni told Knews, "The tenant forgot to pull out the plug and kept charging his heating installation, which caused a fire. Now I have nowhere to go." Neighborhood committees are presently devising a resettlement plan.

The building, which was originally constructed in 1930, is the former site of Avondale House, and utilized Spanish architecture features. It was later divided up for housing and assigned to ordinary residents. The fire did the most damage to the ground floor, and blackened the walls of the second floor, but did not cause any serious damage to the main structure of this building.
