Teamwork makes the dream work

A week-long winter camp for youth soccer culture exchange was recently held at the Shanghai University of Sport (SUS). Eighty teenagers aged 9 to 12 from countries and regions along the Belt and Road were invited to take part.

The project was guided by SUS Science and Technology Park, to share the culture of sports between the Belt and Road countries and regions. Its aim is to promote the development and exchange of youth soccer between these places and China.

Teenagers from different lands and of different colors enjoyed the soccer practice and played many friendly matches with local middle and primary school teams. They also played cuju, an ancient Chinese soccer-type game.

Cuju is a competitive sport dating back to 3rd-2nd century BC and is considered by FIFA as the earliest form of soccer. It involves kicking a ball through an opening into a net without the use of hands.

As Spring Festival approaches, the multinational youngsters were also taught how to make Chinese dumplings and paper cuttings.

To prepare for this camp, the organizing committee cooperated with various Chinese enterprises of the Belt and Road initiative to help furnish local schools with soccer equipment and hire coaches for training.

This project will be expanded to include more countries and regions along the Belt and Road by 2020. Furthermore, the organizing committee will establish good cooperation with the local education department to create an international youth soccer league comprised of students from 30 countries and regions.
