Red Cross Society of China, Shanghai Branch, announced Wednesday that a 34-year-old veteran donated his hematopoietic stem cells to save a 2-year-old boy suffering from leukemia, making it the 400th donation, reported Wednesday.

Shanghai Red Cross explained that there are many other donors like veteran Wang Donghua. By the end of 2017, over 150,000 volunteers have registered in Shanghai Marrow Donor Program.

The average age of the donors who have gone through with a donation is 29 years old. They come from different places and all walks of life, and have even benefited 16 foreign patients.

After the first stem cell transplant surgery was made by Shanghai Huashan Hospital in 1996, Shanghai has completed 400 similar operations. Thus far, eight hospitals in the city are officially able to carry out the transplantation, including Changhai Hospital and Shanghai Children's Medical Center.
