The 33rd Shanghai Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest was held at Shanghai Science Hall on Sunday, attracting about 300,000 teachers and students from 16 districts in Shanghai, Youth Daily reported Monday.

Enrollment increased in 2018, with 536 schools and 8,071 submissions. The number of applicants compared to the contest in 2017 increased by 42 percent, a record high.

Finalists had a face-to-face debate with judges. Most of the entries were inspired by everyday life, such as an automatic pet-washing cage, an elevator system with an arrival reminder time and a bathtub which can keep water at a constant temperature.

Compared with previous years, the competition system emphasized authenticity and originality.

Moreover, there is strict control of the paper and report words to shorten the review time of the judges.
