The Chinese armed forces on Sunday warned two US warships to leave after they entered waters near Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, China's ministry of defense said.

The Xisha Islands are Chinese territory, and the United States once again dispatched warships to the territorial waters of the Xisha Islands without China's authorization and violated China's laws and relevant international laws, Ministry of Defense spokesperson Wu Qian said on Sunday. "The US has seriously violated China's sovereignty, undermined strategic mutual trust, and undermined peace and security in the South China Sea."

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the Higgins, a guided-missile destroyer, and the Antietam, a guided-missile cruiser, came within 12 nautical miles of the Xisha Islands.

The Chinese military is determined to strengthen sea and air combat readiness and to defend national sovereignty and security, Wu added.
