China's bike-sharing app ofo began providing a news feed on Sunday, a service intended to showcase its "red gene" in line with the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Ofo introduced the new function "take a look" on its app interface, which includes various news channels such as sports, finance, society, photo, video. The content is provided by major State-owned news outlets, such as the Xinhua News Agency, the company told the Global Times.

The new project is a gift ofo's Party committee prepared for the 97th anniversary of the CPC's founding, which fell on Sunday, ofo noted. As the online platform grabs a share of web traffic, ofo is shifting from the transport sector to a news feed platform, which may bring new opportunities for the internet firm.

"The reason behind the launch of 'take a look' was to attract more mainstream young people, especially after ofo cooperated with Xinhua and China Central Television," Dai Wei, the founder of ofo and Party secretary of the committee, was quoted as saying in a statement ofo sent to the Global Times.

The new project was developed voluntarily by 13 Party members, according to ofo. "Take a look" will send out more positive content for users, in addition to its initiative to turn web traffic into cash flow.

A growing number of grassroots Party units have appeared in recent years in private companies, especially innovative tech firms.
