It is totally unacceptable that the US has released a tariff list in an erratic way, and this behavior is hurting China, the whole world and America itself, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, the Trump administration released a list of $200 billion worth of imported Chinese goods to be slapped with 10 percent tariffs, escalating the current trade tensions between the two countries.

The proposed tariffs will not take effect immediately but will undergo a two-month review process by August 30, according to media reports.

"We express our solemn protest. And this irrational behavior [from the US] is unpopular," MOFCOM said.

China is shocked by the actions of the US, and in order to safeguard the core interests of the country and the fundamental interests of the people, the central Chinese government will, as always, have to take necessary countermeasures, the ministry continued.

At the same time, the Chinese government called on the international community to work together to safeguard the rules of the WTO, uphold the values of the multilateral trading system and jointly oppose unilateral trade practices.

"Meanwhile, we will immediately file an additional lawsuit against the US' unilateralist behavior to the WTO," MOFCOM added.
