Shanghai police are currently investigating a scammer posing as a policeman who targeted a Chinese student surnamed Wang in Germany, Xinmin Evening News reported Wednesday.

On June 11, Wang received a call by a stranger who claimed to be Chinese police. The fake officer asked her to provide her parents' personal information because, he claimed, her family in China was suspected of being involved in a case.

Using the information Wang naively provided to the fake cop, on June 13 Wang's mother received a threatening call from a man who claimed that her daughter had been kidnapped in Germany and asked for 2 million yuan ($300,000) as random to release her.

Police noted that this sort of "fake kidnapping" telecommunication fraud is common in China. Authorities warn parents who receive calls about kidnappings that they should stay calm and refuse to provide any information over the phone. Instead, notify their local police for help as soon as possible.
