According to the report of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2015, the nutritional status of Chinese children and adolescents between six and 17 years old has been improved to some extent. However, it is worrisome that the rates of their delayed or compromised physical development and malnutrition are high at 3.2 percent and 9 percent respectively. What's more, there are many children who are in the state of stunted development and malnourishment. Students in underserved areas have a single dietary pattern, and an insufficient intake of protein, especially high-quality protein, that causes malnutrition among many students. Malnutrition is an important reason for the delayed [or compromised] physical development of children in the poverty-stricken areas. It affects not only children's normal physical development but their learning and cognitive abilities as well.
