Chinese netizens paid their respects - some begrudgingly to the "anti-China warrior" John McCain, the US Senator who died on Saturday.

McCain died of brain cancer at the age of 81. He was a six-term Republican senator representing Arizona and twice campaigner of the US presidential elections.

He won the Republican nomination for president in 2008, but lost the election to Barack Obama.

McCain is far from well-known in China, but those who did think of him as an "anti-China figure."

Yet the hashtag "McCain passed away" garnered more than 17 million views on Sina Weibo, and thousands of netizens made comments.

Before entering politics, McCain fought in the Vietnam War, where his jet was shot down and he spent five years as a prisoner of war.

"Another anti-China warrior has fallen. You can have your final rest now," a Sina Weibo user wrote. "After hating China and Russia your whole life, you can finally stop worrying," another Weibo user said.

"McCain was always a warrior and is respected in the US. He is a die-hard figure and is against communism and China, but always in the interests of the US, he was loyal," Shangyu Luren, another net user on Sina said.
