Chinese variety show crew apologizes after clash with fans in Australia

The Chinese variety show Amazing Mealtime apologized on Sina Weibo after photos and video of crew members fighting with fans of a Chinese boy band in Australia went viral yesterday.

About a dozen crew members and fans of the boy band group they were photographing punched and kicked each other outside a Gold Coast hotel, with one college student ending up in the hospital, news.com.au reported.

Video from a witness' mobile phone also allegedly showed the camera crew using their tripods to attack the fans.

Five people have since been charged with assault and public nuisance, and local police have confiscated their passports and belongings, news.com.au reported.

Amazing Mealtime included popular stars like Theo Austin Zhu Zhengting and Justin Huang Minghao. The program would spotlight how the boys earn money in a restaurant in Australia to satisfy the fans' wish lists.

The stars are from a talent show Idol Producer featuring xiaoxianrou (little fresh meat in English), a buzzword which usually refers to young and beautiful male idols achieving star status and brand power.

IQIYI.com, the website which plans to broadcast the show, announced it is reconsidering a cooperation with the show.
