Brazilian Chief Prosecutor Raquel Dodge said Sunday that the Prosecutor's office is ready to take action against those who spread fake news in an attempt to influence voters.

"It is not correct to use false information to bring intranquillity to the population and try to influence voters' will with fake news, much less shed doubt over the election system," she said.

Dodge said that the Brazilian elections are safe and the electronic voting system is something Brazil should be proud of.

Recently, leading presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro questioned the security of the electronic voting system and insinuated that if he does not win, it would only be due to fraud.

Brazilian Public Security Minister Raul Jungmann said that the government investigated reports of fake news, including stories which surfaced in social networks about ballots casting votes for the wrong candidate.

The minister said that people spreading fake stories in order to influence voters will be duly punished.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) said Sunday that elections ran smoothly in the country, with few incidents.
