New music and dance show Love for Yi Region debuted at Beijing's Minzu Theater on Friday and Saturday night.

The show featured the traditional dances, songs and clothing of the Yi ethnic minority in the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The showcase of the region's traditional clothing was the highlight of the show as it shone a spotlight on the different clothing styles that exist among the 13 branches of the Yi ethnic group. According to local Yi custom, girls must learn embroidery from a very early age, a skill that will accompany them for their entire lives. Designs such as the moon, stars, flowers and birds are usually used to decorate their embroidered clothing.

The show got its start from a local festival in Zhiju village in Chuxiong. The annual gathering sees festival-goers gather on a hill to showcase their clothing in a sort of ancient fashion show.
