The government of Wuhu, East China's Anhui Province said that a "gorgeous blue lake" popular online is actually a mining pit seriously polluted and warned local residents to stay away.

A resident of Wuhu surnamed Wu posted a 10-second video online introducing a beautiful lake in Wuhu, saying, "A gorgeous sapphire lake! It is not overseas, but in Wuhu." The video has been viewed over 2.7 million times as of Wednesday, local news website ahwang.com reported.

According to the report, Wuhu police issued a statement on its official Sina Weibo account on Tuesday that the so-called lake is a polluted mining pit in the Baima Mountain in Yijiang district, with a depth of about 70 meters. The statement said the water in the highly alkaline pit is current under government remediation.

The police statement has been deleted as of press time.

Staff at the Yijiang district's environmental protection bureau did not respond to questions from the Global Times on Thursday.

The pit, located in the mining area on Baima Mountain, was discovered in March 2018 by a provincial environmental supervision group, wuhunews.com reported in September.

The report quoted the head of Yijiang district's environmental protection bureau as saying that the remediation plan had already been decided.
