Video of students in North China offering snacks to a statue of Confucius and praying for a passing grade in their graduate entrance exam, has gone viral on social media.

The video shows a female student on the campus of Dalian Maritime University in Northeast China's Liaoning Province using both hands to place a red apple at the feet of the Confucius statue. Apples, oranges, Chinese hamburgers, lollipops, gingers, cigarettes were seen the day before exam day.

The video quickly made the rounds on social media. Netizens gave the students some advice on the items that they should leave at the Confucius statue: something barbecued, a bag of salt, a pen and a pot, which in Mandarin has the phonetic meaning of "definitely pass the graduate exam."

The students believe praying to Confucius, the greatest sage and teacher, will help them pass the exam, the Beijing News reported on Saturday.

A record 2.9 million students took the national entrance exam for graduate studies this year. The primary motivation for the candidates is to improve their employment opportunities, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
