China Unicom Beijing Tuesday announced the launch of 5G coverage for Tiananmen Square, ahead of the upcoming two sessions, annual meetings of the national legislature and the top political advisory body.

According to the Beijing government's official website, the base stations will provide high-speed internet service to China Media Group's HD livestreaming coverage of the National People's Congress and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, which will be held in early March.

China Media Group is a new broadcasting platform made up of China Central Television, China National Radio and China Radio International.

China Unicom Beijing on Tuesday officially launched the 5G base stations to become the first to provide 5G service on Tiananmen Square.

After the Central Economic Working Conference offered incentives to accelerate the commercial usage of 5G, China Unicom decided Tiananmen Square, in the heart of downtown Beijing was a perfect place to start.

Tests of the 5G base stations show download speeds at 2.6 gigabytes per second, many times faster than 4G, while upload speeds reached 200 megabytes per second, enough to meet the requirements for China Media Group's news coverage during the two sessions.

Along with high-speed internet surfing, a 5G network can also provide high definition video and facilitate artificial intelligence services such as autonomous vehicles and better interactivity between consumers and businesses.
