A camgirl from Southwest China's Sichuan Province has been detained for posting videos showing her catching fish while wearing a red neckscarf, which is the symbol of the Young Pioneers of China.

Police in Rongxian county in Zigong city issued a statement on their official Sina Weibo account on Monday, which said a woman surnamed Tang was detained and fined on March 28 as the red scarf represents a corner of the red flag and symbolizes the revolutionary tradition. The scarf is emblematic of the blood of revolutionary martyrs.

Tang's behavior has seriously defiled patriotic heroes and martyrs, the glory of the Young Pioneers, and people's love for the country symbolized by the red scarf, causing a bad influence on society, said the statement.

According to the statement, Tang has filmed herself in farmlands and catching fish while wearing the red scarf on her neck since 2018 to attract more followers.

She then uploaded the video clips to Kuaishou, one of the most popular short-video streaming platforms in China, under the account name of Yi Bin Ying Ying, attracting more than 3 million views.

On March 28, Rongxian police arrested Tang and asked her to delete the videos based on the Law on Penalties for Administration of Public Security. Tang will be held in administrative detention for 12 days and fined 1,000 yuan ($150).

Tang's detention grabbed netizens' attention on Sina Weibo. Some net users questioned whether the punishment was too severe or if there is any legitimate basis for the police to arrest her.

Other netizens supported the police saying that Tang undoubtedly desecrated the red scarf and she should be held to account for her misbehavior, which was simply to attract views and clicks.

China's newly-enacted Law on Heroes and Martyrs Protection clearly stipulates that it is forbidden to distort, smear, desecrate, or deny the deeds and spirit of heroes and martyrs. It requires prompt reaction of related departments to protect heroes and martyrs.
