An international car race won by a Swedish driver in a Lynk & Co 03 made by Chinese automaker Geely received almost as many taunts as it did praise on Chinese social media after being accused of asking the driver to wave China's national flag to cheer for the victory.

After his surprise win in his car's debut race in World Touring Car Cup contest in Morrocco, veteran driver Thed Björk, climbed on the roof of the car and waved China's flag, according to a video posted by Yang Xueliang, vice president of Geely, on his Sina Weibo account on Wednesday.

A number of Chinese netizens complained the company didn't have a Chinese driver on the team of four drivers.

"Geely even asked a foreigner to wave our national flag," wrote a netizen. Lynk & Co is a Chinese-Swedish automotive brand owned by Geely based in Zhejiang Province.

Yang replied to the criticism saying China's flag had been given to Björk by a spectator.

"It's fine if you don't cheer for us, but there's no need to boo," wrote Yang.

Björk said in an interview that he was delighted to wave the flag and felt the warm support of fans.

Other netizens questioned the overly nationalistic view of the social media critics. "What's wrong with Björk holding China's flag?" wrote a netizen.
